The Hype of AVATAR

In case you haven't heard .... James Cameron is back with his new mind-blowing, special effects laden, out of this world, eye popping 3D event AVATAR!

Wow by the way I described that it seems like a really good flick, and that my friends is the point.

Do you remember a film where the hype was everywhere? It was all over the television, radio, it had a spot in the trailer section in almost every single movie. There were cast interviews, behind the scenes clips, and promotional materials everywhere you turned... only to watch the movie and find out it wasn't that good.

The same argument can be said for AVATAR some feel it will be amazing and others feel it will be a box office bomb.

Is all the hype to much? Are people going to be sick of this movie before it opens?

It could be said that bombarding the public will fuel their drive to see the movie. It is a clever tactic but it may have a 50/50 chance of failing because of over stimulation. Will AVATAR succeed in the box office or blow up in our faces?

My opinion is Hollywood is treading on yet another double-edged sword. I think AVATAR will succeed based on Cameron's other works. He delivers a solid picture that keeps the audience engaged. However, seeing promos for it everywhere almost makes me feel tired of seeing it and I feel less compelled to go see it.

Whats your opinion? Is there too much hype these days? Or is it a clever PR tactic that makes us crave for more?

Dealing with Affairs

When a celebrity is exposed as a drug user, alcoholic, a mean spirited individual, gets into a car crash, has an affair, and (in the worse case scenario) dies. We all hear about it. Whether it be on the radio, T.V. or the internet.

I'm going to take two recent examples and look at how these celebs handled it.

First off we have David Letterman. As you probably know, David Letterman was blackmailed by a producer who threatened to disclose an affair Letterman had been having with women who have worked on his talked show.

How did this scandal come to light? The producer? No. It came right from Letterman himself, he put it out there in the open, he apologized to those he hurt and he moved on.

As a public relations student I saw this and thought "Wow, good for him for getting that out there." Letterman did it right, he admitted to it, got it out in the open and now I don't even think about it.

On the other hand, we have Tiger Woods.

Recapping the incident, last Friday Tiger Woods crashed his car, had reported scratches down the side of his face, and the media speculated and informed the public that he was having an affair and his wife attacked him when she learned about it. Mr. Woods has declined comments regarding the incident until today where he said that he failed his family with personal mistakes.

From a PR perspective: Although he basically confirmed the affair, he left the public and media in the dark for quite awhile, and when that happens rumors start flying, credibility and respect are lost. He just needed to come out with the truth and he may have helped himself in the long run.
